Windows Home Server is an overlay for the Windows 2003 Server. In addition HP has added several other software applications that provide media collection and streaming.

Not as easy as advertised
I am pretty good at this stuff - but still have not gotten this unit installed after many many hours of work. To start, when I got it, I saw it did not support WIndows 7.

HP EX490 Worthless Media Functions (Twonky and HP Software)
Absolutely worthless media functions!!!! Great as a NAS storage device! In fact, this is the only reason you should buy this product.

Hardware is slick, but having some buggy issues, and more of a challenge than a synology
I am coming to the EX490 from a Synology DS207+
Basically I made this move primarily to add more storage, but also because I wanted the ability to remote desktop into the server and have access to more advanced apps/features that way.

Should have bought a Mac
I've had nothing but issues with this server from installation, setup and daily usage. It just doesn't want to play well with my Macs.
